Costa Rica Overview Costa Rica is located in Central America between Panama and Nicaragua and is one of the most stable and robust democracies in Latin America, with a long-standing commitment to economic growth and social development. Christopher Columbus was the first non-indigenous explorer to discover Costa Rica when he arrived in 1502 on his fourth voyage to the new world. From that point on it was a Spanish Colony and due to the immense amount of gold the Spaniards found named it Costa Rica – Spanish for “rich coast”.
