Indian Village Tour – 8/9 hours
- $180/pp (lunch included) |
|
| This
tour starts the same as the Tucan

Tucan Bar over two more mountain
ranges to the Boruca Indian Village
where you can enjoy local cuisine
as well as shop for many of the
local crafts such as hand carved
decorative masks that you see in
many gift shops across Costa Rica. |
|
| |
| NOTE:
The
Boruca Indigenous Reserve is home
to approximately 2,000 native
Costa Ricans. The area is remote,
with almost inaccessible roads.
The Boruca practice subsistence
farming, and the only cash influx
comes from the sale of their folk
art.
The Boruca are the only indigenous
people in Costa Rica that still
maintain their Pre-Columbian weaving
techniques. They continue to cultivate
two types of cotton - white cotton
(native) and a light brown cotton
called tecolote. The Boruca have
retained their knowledge of natural
dyes, and the women weave on a
backstrap loom. Historically,
women wove their traditional striped
skirts (mantas) and mens' belts,
but now they only weave small
bags in simple striped patterns.
The Boruca are also known for
their carved balsa wood masks
and their hand-carved gourds which
function as decorative household
utensils. |
